CHENNAI: The Avadi city police has said that there has been a considerable reduction of crimes in the commissionerate in 2025, in comparison to the previous years, owing to pro-active work taken up by the police.

This year, 38 murders were recorded in the commissionerate limits. In 2023 and 2024, there were 59 and 48 murders respectively.

“Stern action against rowdy elements and gang members led to the reduction in murders. This year, 190 persons were detained under the Goondas Act in 2025,” an official release stated.

There has been considerable reduction of cases of attempt to murder, SC/ST act (prevention of atrocities) cases and property offences like house-break, chain snatching and mobile snatching cases.

Avadi city police said that stringent action was taken to eradicate drug trafficking and sale of banned oral tobacco products. “This year alone, 1,800 kg of ganja was seized and 736 persons were arrested. Similarly, 18,900 kg of banned tobacco products were seized, which is among the highest in the State. A few kingpins involved in gutkha sales were also arrested and detained under Goondas Act,” the release added.

Apart from enforcement, Avadi city police also took up awareness initiatives like ‘100 yards’, in which 100 yards distance was marked in 200 government schools and barricades have been placed there to demarcate the area as ‘No Tobacco Zone’. All shops within this 100 yards area have been sensitised not to sell tobacco products.

This year, a special drive was initiated and all POCSO Act cases have been charge-sheeted within the mandatory 60 days.

The number of fatal road accidents dropped by 30% this year in comparison to 2023. According to official data, 290 fatal accidents were reported in 2025, a considerable reduction from 424 last year and 420 in 2023.

As part of public grievance redressal, Avadi Police Commissioner, K Shankar has been meeting petitioners every day from 12.30 pm to 4 pm at the Commissionerate and mass public grievance meeting is held every Wednesday. “Special focus has been given for the disposal of petitions in ‘Mudhalvarin Mugavari’. Avadi city has the best performance among all the Police Commissionerates with 99% ‘A’ rating in ‘Mudhalvarin Mugavari’ petition disposal,” Avadi city police said.
