CHENNAI: The SRM College of Occupational Therapy (SRMCOT), SRM Institute of Science and Technology, observed World Autism Awareness Day 2026 with a programme titled, ‘Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has Value’.

SRMCOT, in collaboration with the Department of Paediatrics, SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, also launched the ‘Paediatric Health Screening’ initiative at the Autism Centre of Excellence.

Addition, it conducted an awareness that included a dental screening camp, a parent support group session, and various awareness activities. Competitions were also organised for children to identify and showcase their unique skills.

Dr Jayanthi R, dean, SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, stated, “Autism is not a disorder, it’s a spectrum. Acceptance, early intervention, and individualised care help manage it.”

Dr J Vijayalakshmy, senior consultant, NIEPMD, highlighted the critical role of communication in the development of children with autism. “Enabling effective communication should remain the primary focus, as it is fundamental to independence and social integration,” she added.

Dr U Ganapathy Sankar, dean, SRMCOT, piped in: “Active parental involvement, when combined with professional guidance, significantly enhanced developmental outcomes, enabling children to achieve better functional independence and quality of life.”
