CHENNAI: The KK Nagar police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the burglary of the Varashakti Vinayagar Temple located on Arcot Road. The arrest led to the recovery of two bronze idols, a gold coin, and a silver chain.

The incident came to light on the morning of January 18, when the temple priest, Chandrasekhar (48), a resident of West Mambalam, discovered the break-in. Upon arriving to open the temple, he found the lock to the sanctum sanctorum broken. An inventory revealed the theft of two bronze idols of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Nandikeswarar, along with a half-gram gold coin and a 108-gram silver 'poonool' (sacred thread).

Based on a complaint filed by the priest, a special police team led by an Inspector from the KK Nagar station launched a detailed investigation. Their probe led to the arrest of the accused, identified as Karthi (20), a native of Tirumangaicheri in Thanjavur district.

Police successfully recovered all the stolen items from the accused's possession. During the interrogation, it was also revealed that Karthi has a prior criminal case registered against him.

The arrested suspect was produced before a judicial magistrate on Thursday and has been remanded to judicial custody. Further investigation is underway.
