CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday inaugurated 776 urban housing units at Seven Wells in North Chennai and distributed allotment orders to beneficiaries under the North Chennai Development Scheme.

The newly inaugurated housing project, implemented by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), has been constructed at a cost of Rs 147 crore near the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital.

The project comprises two blocks of ground plus nine floors. Each of the 776 dwelling units has a built-up area of 415 sq ft and includes a living hall, kitchen, bedroom, toilet and bathroom. Forty units have been earmarked for persons with disabilities.

Inside the housing complex includes an anganwadi centre, an urban health and wellness centre, fair price shops, a Chief Minister’s Study Centre, a library, separate gyms for men and women, an open-air auditorium, children's play areas and landscaped open spaces.

The project is intended to rehabilitate families who had been living for decades along roadsides and canal banks in Mannadi, Muthialpet, Seven Wells, Broadway, Valluvar Kottam Road, Jutkapuram, Kalyanapuram and Wood Wharf.

During the inauguration, allotment orders were handed over to beneficiaries, along with select welfare assistance. Later, the CM laid the foundation stone for 144 additional flats at Water Tank Street, Valluvar Kottam Road, at an estimated cost of Rs 31 crore.

The new units will be constructed as ground plus nine-floor structures and will form part of an integrated housing complex, where construction of 700 flats is nearing completion.
