16 hurt in Pudukkottai temple fest clash

Tension gripped several parts of Avudayarkoil in the district and 16 persons sustained injuries in a clash that broke out between two groups over a temple festival on Tuesday night.

Sources said that one person was arrested in connection with the hurling of a petrol bomb during the clash. 

According to sources, the car procession of Sri Muthumariyamman temple, Pandipathiram village near Avudaiyarkoil was held as part of the annual festival on Tuesday evening. 

The devotees played cine songs with a deafening volume. Raman, a resident of the same village, requested the organisers to reduce the volume. As the organisers ignored his plea, an altercation broke out between them. At this juncture, Annadurai, another resident, who came to the spot with a group assaulted Raman. 

Angered by this, Raman and his friends retaliated. This snowballed into a group clash and both the groups attacked each other with lethal weapons. 

When news about the attack on Annadurai spread, some of his relatives rushed to the spot and attacked Raman (49), his wife Muthu (42), Bharathi (21) Meiyyappan, Subbaiyah, Perumal, Jeyaraj. All the injured were rushed to Aranthangi GH. Annadurai, who sustained serious injuries, was later referred to Pudukkottai GH. 

Petrol bomb hurled 

Meanwhile, Ananda Kumar, a resident of the village, hurled a petrol bomb on the temple, but it did not explode. 

On information, police rushed to the trouble-hit village and Ananda Kumar was arrested, besides taking 10 persons from the village into custody in connection with the clash.
