CHENNAI: Swelect Energy Systems is gearing up for a major foray into battery energy storage systems (BESS), with an investment of about Rs 150 crore at its Coimbatore solar module manufacturing facility, CEO-MD Arulkumar Shanmugasundaram said, outlining the company’s transition from a pure-play solar firm to an integrated energy solutions provider.
Speaking at the company’s rebranding and product launch event here on Wednesday, Arulkumar said Swelect’s move into BESS is aligned with the evolving renewable energy landscape, where round-the-clock power is becoming critical. “The future is not just solar or wind, but integrated energy solutions combining generation and storage. Battery energy storage is a critical enabler of this transition,” he said.
Noting that BESS are central to the future of reliable and resilient power, he said “as energy consumption patterns change and renewable penetration increases, storage will be the key to ensuring round-theclock availability, grid stability, and energy independence.”
With the launch of Numergy, Swelect is addressing these needs across homes, businesses and industries, he added.
Numergy offers a comprehensive range of BESS and home energy solutions designed to address the growing need for reliable, round-the-clock power across residential, SOHO (small office home office) and large-scale commercial and industrial applications.
Swelect has a strong manufacturing base with current solar module capacity of 1 GW being expanded to 2 GW. It plans to leverage its vertical integration to scale BESS offerings.
Arulkumar also highlighted Swelect’s financial strength, pointing to over Rs 450 crore in cash reserves and stable cash flows from its 150 MW independent power producer (IPP) assets. The company aims to scale its IPP portfolio to 1 GW over the next two years without raising fresh equity.
R Chellapan, founder-vice chairman, reflected on the company’s evolution, recalling the strategic decision to sell the UPS business to Legrand and transform Numeric into Swelect.
The rebranding, he said, marked a clear shift in identity as it moved from a legacy power backup brand to a future-focused clean energy company.
With deep roots in both solar manufacturing and the legacy Numeric UPS business, Swelect believes it is uniquely positioned to emerge as an early leader in India’s fast-growing BESS market.
