CHENNAI: Mitsubishi Electric India inaugurated an air conditioner and compressor manufacturing facility at Gummidipoondi on Friday with an investment of Rs 2,100 crore.

Spread across 52 acres, the new facility was virtually inaugurated by chief minister MK Stalin in the presence of Japan consul general Muneo Takahashi.

The Japanese company strengthened India's localised HVAC ecosystem with its latest investment. The Chennai facility is Mitsubishi Electric's second facility in India within a span of two years, following the inauguration of its factory automation systems manufacturing plant in Pune in 2023.

The new facility has an annual production capacity of 3,00,000 air conditioners and 6,50,000 compressor units, while generating more than 2,100 direct and indirect jobs.

Speaking on the occasion, Atsushi Takase, MD, Mitsubishi Electric India, said the facility will support the growing demand through local manufacturing. India happens to be one of its most important global markets, he said, noting that from a sales and service approach, the company moved to engineering support to finally manufacturing, reflecting a "major step" in its India journey.

TN industry minister TRB Rajaa, in his address, highlighted the state's prowess in manufacturing as it already houses 40,000 factories.

The minister said TN, growing at over 11 per cent, is the only state in the country to register a double-digit growth.

With TN generating 41 per cent of India's electronics exports, the scope for localisation of the supply chain is enormous.

Expecting Mitsubishi Electric India's localisation to go up to 70-75 per cent from the current level of 40 per cent, Rajaa assured that the state would step in to support the process of localisation.

Also, three out of the country's 12 Japanese industrial townships are present in TN, signifying its "multi-cultural cauldron" effect. The state is backed by a solid engineering talent pool, which is driving Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, German and French investments into TN, the minister sought to point out.

Meanwhile, Vikram Goel, chief business officer, industrial, Mahindra Lifespace Developers, in a release, said, “the expansion of Mitsubishi Electric India’s manufacturing operations at Origins by Mahindra reflects the strength of our integrated industrial cluster model.

The continued expansion of large global manufacturers like Mitsubishi Electric India within our developments reinforces the trust placed by these brands in our platform and our ability to support long-term industrial growth.”

Incidentally, Mahindra Industrial Park Chennai Ltd is a joint venture between Mahindra World City Developers and Sumitomo Corporation of Japan.
