Our Lady of Guadalupe as the statue is locally known, started to shed "tears of olive oil" in the month of May this year.

Parishioners noticed the tears stemming from the Virgin Mary’s eyes. An investigator with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Cruces stated that the 'tears' had the same chemical base as olive oil found in perfumes. It should also be noted that the substance is also found in chrism, a sacred oil used in the Catholic Church to anoint parishioners.

The "weeping" is a rare occurence, say the church leaders which as prompted people throng the church to watch the phenomenon.

Deacon Jim Winder, vice chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Las Cruces said there the liquid has been collected to perform a complete investigation to remove questions about adulteration, staging or urban myth theories.
