The decision was taken at a meeting of the Committee of the Board chaired by J Chandrashekhar, Chairman of the Board, and attended by top water resources department officials of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu contended that it has not got 12 tmc feet of water excluding three tmc feet for evaporation losses despite good rains in the catchment areas. It was submitted by the state that by January at least 8 tmc feet should have been provided and so far, only 5 tmc feet has been released for Chennai.

Andhra Pradesh said it has not got adequate supply of water from upper riparian states and there could also be a lot of evaporation losses.

Officials of Karnataka and Maharashtra did not attend the meeting.
