Convicted Pondy AINRC MLA disqualified
All India NR Congress (AINRC) legislator Ashok Anand, who was convicted and sentenced by a CBI special court here in a case pertaining to amassing of wealth disproportionate to his known source of income, was disqualified as a member of the territorial Assembly with effect from October 30, the date of conviction.

Speaker V Vaithilingam in a notification said that the member is being disqualified under sub clause (e) of clause (1) of Article 102 of the Constitution read with section 14(1) of the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963.
Recalling the conviction and sentence of Anand, the Speaker said that the existing provision contained in section 8 of the Representation of the Peoples Act, 1951(Act 43 of 1951) read with sub clause (e) of clause (1) of Article 102 of the Constitution of India read with section 14(1) of the Government of Union Territories Act,1963 provide for disqualification of a convicted person.
Consequent upon the conviction Ashok Anand stands disqualified for being a member of the Puducherry Legislative Assembly from the date of conviction for the period of his sentence and shall continue to be disqualified for a further period of six years since his release in terms of the existing provisions contained in section 8 of the Representation of Peoples Act ,1951(Act 43 of 1951). The Speaker also declared the seat vacant.
