Association opposes move to shut Jipmer Karaikal
Union Territory of Puducherry Centac students’ and parents’ association on Wednesday urged the government to take immediate steps to thwart the reported move to shut down Jipmer Karaikal.
Puducherry
President of the Association, Narayanasamy, in a statement said that in case Jipmer Karaikal was shut, the local students will lose 14 MBBS seats.
He further said that Jipmer is functioning with 100 MBBS seats in Puducherry and 50 in Karaikal. Of the 100 seats in Puducherry, 40 are reserved for the locals while 14 of the 50 seats are reserved in Karaikal. If Jipmer Karaikal was closed, Puducherry will lose 14 seats that are provided in Karaikal.
Narayanasamy said that the students here were getting 476 seats in all medical colleges.
However, the deemed universities in Puducherry stopped reservation for locals after getting a court order in this regard, bringing down the seats for local students to 271.
In this backdrop, any move to close Jipmer Karaikal will further bring down the medical seats to the local students and hence, the government should take earnest efforts to get Jipmer Karaikal continued after providing adequate facilities.
It may be noted that there was a report in a local media that it is being contemplated to close down Jipmer Karaikal due to lack of facilities and to shift the students to Jipmer, Puducherry.
