#MeToo: Union Minister MJ Akbar 'sends resignation' over sexual harassment allegations, say reports
Multiple women in the last few days have offered their accounts of alleged sexual harassment by MJ Akbar when he was a journalist as the #MeToo movement swept social media, bringing to fore sordid tales of sexual harassment by influential men in different walks of life.
New Delhi
Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs MJ Akbar has reportedly tendered his resignation to the BJP-led Modi government. According to sources, he sent his resignation through e-mail.
MJ Akbar's name cropped up on social media earlier this week as part of the #MeToo movement and since then pressure has been increasing on the government to sack him. Protesters sought immediate action against him while they also demanded his removal from the union council of ministers.
The minister has sought an appointment with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, according to government sources.
Earlier today, when the tainted Union Minister returned to India from a foreign tour, he managed to evade questions from reporters at the airport.Â
"There will be a statement later", he said.
As per sources, the minister wrote to Principal Secretary to the PMO and tendered his resignation. A final call on the resignation will be taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
More details awaited.
