According to a statement from Raj Nivas, the desilting would benefit 42 ponds, 27 tanks and cultivate 3,500 hectares of Agriculture land, which would lead to employment to the rural poor, besides all other accruing benefits of sanitation and drinking water.

This collaborative model would correct decades-old deficiency in desilting of 25 canals, not cleaned since the availability of foreign funds from the European Union during 2004-2008, the officers and members of the local community said.

This will also make Puducherry water rich, in a sustainable way. There is no longer dependency on foreign funds or government finances.

The cost-effective model is leading to already cleaning of 25 canals, which will fill 84 tanks and feed hundreds of ponds in several villages of Puducherry, including the neighbouring areas of Tamil Nadu, which otherwise suffer flooding. This will also result in filling of lakes such as Ousteri, also a bird Sanctuary, Bahour, Kuruvinatham, and Velrampet.
