Train service remains suspended in Kashmir for security reasons
Train service on Tuesday remained suspended for security reasons for the third day in the valley, where separatists extended the strike in protest against killing of four civilians in security force action on Sunday.
Srinagar
"Train service will remain suspended for security reasons in the Kashmir valley on Tuesday,' a senior railway official told UNI this morning.
He said all trains between Srinagar to Banihal in Jammu region passing through south Kashmir will remain suspended for security reasons for the third day. Therefore, no train will run on this route till further orders.
The official said trains will also not chug on Srinagar-Badgam and Baramulla track in north Kashmir.
On Sunday, the trains were running normally on the north Kashmir route, when it was suspended in south Kashmir.
The official said the train service has been suspended following fresh advisory received from police last night not to run any train in Kashmir for security reasons.
"We are acting on the advice of police," he said, adding the decision was taken in the interest of safety of passengers and railway property.
Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik, had called for a strike on Monday against the killing of civilians and militants.
However, the JRL extended the strike today also.
Thirteen militants, including top commanders, and three Army jawans were killed in three separate encounters on Sunday in south Kashmir, where four civilians also died in security force action.
Railways suffered major damage in the past during demonstrations in the valley, where last year the service remained suspended for more than 50 times, partially or fully due to strike and demonstrations.
