    Unidentified gunmen shot at and wounded a madrassa teacher in Kashmir

    Unidentified gunmen shot and wounded a madrassa teacher in south Kashmir district of Kulgam late Thursday night, a police spokesman said on Friday.

    Earlier, suspected militants shot dead a Special Police Officer (SPO) and injured his wife in Anantnag, where a youth with bullet injury was admitted to hospital.

    Spokesman said gunmen fired upon a madrassa teacher Sayar Wani when he was coming out of a mosque after prayers in Kulgam. Wani received four bullets in his leg, he said adding the injured has been admitted to hospital where his condition is stated to be stable.

    He said militants forced their entry into the house of a SPO Mushtaq Ahmad at Katsoo, Bijbehara, in Anantnag district last night. However, before SPO and other family members could do anything, militants fired at Mushtaq and his wife Farida.

    SPO died on the spot while Farida was rushed to local hospital from where she was referred to Srinagar in a critical condition.

    Though security forces conducted search operation in the area, the militants had managed to escape.

    Spokesman said a group of militants, travelling in a car, opened indiscriminate firing when signaled to stop by an Army naka party in Shopian. However, the militants lost control of the vehicle and got stuck, he said adding militants abandoned the car and managed to escape under the cover of darkness. Later security forces conducted search operation in the area but nobody was arrested.

    Spokesman said one Shahid Bhat admitted to hospital in Anantnag with a bullet injury. However, the circumstances in which he received the injury is being ascertained. 

    The injured is stated to be stable. There is no report of any protest in the area as reported by certain sections of media. 

    He said FIR's in all the three incidents have been lodged and investigation taken up by the Police.
