Train service resumes after two days in Kashmir
Train service resumed on Thursday after remaining suspended for two days due to security reasons in the Kashmir valley.
Srinagar
"We have resumed train services in the valley," a railway official told UNI.
Trains will chug on Srinagar-Badgam in central Kashmir to Baramulla in north today. Similarly, trains will run on Badgam-Srinagar to Anantnag-Qazigund in south to Banihal in Jammu region as per schedule, he said.
The official said the train service was suspended on December 19 on Badgam-Srinagar to Anantnag-Qazigund and Banihal in Jammu region following killing of two Jaish-e Mohammad (JeM) militants in an encounter with security forces in Shopian. However, train service from Srinagar-Badgam in the central Kashmir to Baramulla in north operated normally normally on that day.
On Wednesday, all train runs were suspended in the Kashmir valley for security reasons following advisory received from the police, he said.
The " Joint Resistance Leadership", consisting of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and Mohammad Yaseen Malik had called for a general strike today against the killing of a driver in Kupwara and a woman in Shopian in alleged security force firing. However, security force claimed both the persons were killed during encounters between militants and security forces. The authorities have already ordered a magisterial probe in the killing of driver.
This was the 49th time when train service has been suspended partially or fully this year in the Kashmir valley, where train has become very popular against all other mode of transport because it is safe, cheap and fast.
