Robert Vadra condemns Tarun Vijay's remark, says 'this belittles our heritage'
Condemning the remarks by BJP leader Tarun Vijay on people of South India, industrialist and son-in-law of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Robert Vadra said, “such remarks belittle our heritage”.
New Delhi
In a post on social media, Vadra, without naming Tarun Vijay, said, “Recent comments by a Member of Parliament on the people of South India really got me thinking, what level of decorum is being maintained, in politics today.”
“To me, these remarks clearly reflect the mindset that these leaders have, for the people of our country. India is known for its diversity and its unity and it has an age old proud culture to showcase that. These remarks by anyone completely demeans and belittles, our heritage," he said.
''We need to influence and create a united and secular India, for the next generation and ahead. I seriously condemn such remarks,'' Mr Vadra said.
Participating in a TV debate on racism in India in the context of last week's attacks on Nigerians in Delhi suburb Greater Noida, Mr Vijay said, "If we were racist, why would we have the entire south (India)... which is you know, completely Tamil, you know Kerala, you know Karnataka and Andhra.
Why do we live with them ...We have blacks, black people around us. You are denying your own nation, you are denying your ancestry, you are denying your culture."
After his remarks stirred a controversy, Mr Vijay clarified that what he meant to say when he appeared on TV channel Al Jazeera, was that, "In many (sic) parts of the nation we have different people, in colour and never ever we had any discrimination against them."
