Talking to media persons on the sidelines of a private function earlier in the day, Suresh Prabhu, who was here to inaugurate a host of railway projects including the fifth and sixth line from Basin Bridge to Moore Market Complex, said the railways had called six top global companies who have the technology that could travel up to 350km/hour speed and expressed government’s interest to develop with them. “Talks are in advanced stage,” the Minister said. The country would be able to export such highspeed trains if they (firms) could manufacture them here, the ambitious Minister added.

Responding to a pointed query on the time frame for launching such high-speed trains services here, the chartered accountant turned Minister said that it could happen in 10 years and these were new areas they were working on. It may be noted that India had already signed a pact with Japan for the first high speed rail link between Mumbai and Ahmedabad which would be based on the Shinkansen bullet train technology in Japan.
