CRPF jawan killed, eight injured in ongoing encounter in Srinagar
A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was killed, while eight others, including a Jammu and Kashmir policeman, were injured when militants attacked a search party today at Shehar-e-Khas (SeK) in the summer capital.
Srinagar
The attack came just over an hour before the 70th Independence Day (ID) celebrations were to be held at Bakshi Stadium, which is around six km from the encounter site.
A CRPF spokesperson told UNI that a security force search party came under heavy fire at Nowhatta in the SeK, where curfew continued to remain in force from the last 38 days.
He said security forces also retaliated, which led to an encounter. Seven CRPF jawans and a policeman were injured in the initial exchange of fire.Â
The injured were immediately taken to a hospital, where one of them died.
Additional security forces have been rushed to the spot and the entire area has been sealed, the spokesperson added, apprehending that around three to four militants were still hiding in the area.
The operation was still going on when the reports came in, he said.
