    Marxist-led LDF set to regain power with thumping success in Kerala

    In a major setback to the ruling Congress in Kerala, the Marxist-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) is all set to capture power, as the front established a comfortable lead in 90 of the 140 constituencies, where counting of votes polled in the May 16 elections, got under way this morning.

    The ruling Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) could establish lead only in 48 constituencies BJP veteran O Rajagopal and the Independent candidate P C George are the other candidates, who established comfortable lead.

    Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Leader of the Opposition V S Achuthanandan, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, CPI(M) politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan, were among those, who established comfortable lead.

    Kerala Congress (M) leader and former state finance minister K M Mani, who has been representing Pala ever since the constituency came into existence in 1965, facing a tough fight time. 

    Six Ministers in the outgoing cabinet -- K Babu, P K Jayalekshmi, Shibu Baby John, Abdu Rabb, K P Mohanan and Manjalamkuzhi Ali -- were trailing.

    BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan is trailing by over 1,500 votes in Vattiyoorkavu, where sitting member K Muraleedharan of the Congress is leading.

    Tribal leader C K Janu, who contested the election from Sulthanbathery in Wayanad district with the support of BJP was in the distant third position.

    In Pathanapuram, which witnessed a clash of popular actors from all three primary coalitions, LDF candidate K B Ganesh Kumar (KC-B) is leading by nearly 25,000 votes against his nearest Congress rival Jagadeesh.  

    In Tiruvananthapuram, former cricketer and the BJP candidate Shantakumaran Sreesanth is trailing by over 5,000 votes behind Health Minister V S Sivakumar of the Congress. The LDF was leading a majority of seats in ten out of 14 districts in the state.
