Official sources said nearly 100 houses were damaged in sea rage in the coastal belt of Thiruvananthapuram and Alappuzha. The worst affected were the coastal areas of Valiathura and Cheriyathura in the state capital.

Sea erosion was reported in many areas of coastal Alappuzha. Several houses were damaged when sea water entered the houses. Relief camps were opened in affected areas. Authorities evacuated people from in low-lying areas where many houses were damaged, the officials said.

A depression formed along the Bay of Bengal has caused the heavy downpour in the state. The rain is likely to continue for the next three days according to the meteorological centre. The meteorological centre here predicts that heavy rains (exceeding 7 cm) to very heavy rainfall (exceeding 13 cm) is most likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala till Wednesday.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority said the heavy rains is due to the low pressure formed in the Bay of Bengal. They also alerted District Collectors to take necessary precautionary steps to face any eventualities as the rains are expected to continue for two more days.
