Speaking on the theme ‘Rejuvenating Democracy, giving Voice to Youth’ at the ongoing 134th Inter Parliamentary Union Assembly at Lusaka (Zambia), Mahajan stated, ‘’Youth are always a great asset. We need to engage them productively.

If their youthful energy is not used properly, it may get misdirected and become detrimental to the larger interests of society.’’ When the system channelises their energies in the proper direction, it strengthens the democratic fabric, provides a fillip to the developmental and promotes social harmony, she said.

The Lok Sabha Speaker pointed out that India was a young nation with about 27.5 per cent of its population in the age group of 15-29 years. In the next 20 years, these figures are going to increase and therefore, it is necessary to make them play an active part of the system, she said. She informed the gathering that the National Young Leader Programme was launched with the objective of developing leadership qualities and service motive among the youth.

Mahajan is leading an Indian Parliamentary Delegation to the 134th Inter Parliamentary Union Assembly being held at Lusaka (Zambia) from 19 to 23.
