Karnataka government distributes 50 lakh LED bulbs
Karnataka has achieved a milestone by distributing 50 lakh LED bulbs within three months of launching of Ujala (Unnat Jyoti by affordable LEDs for all) Scheme popularly known as ‘Hosa Belaku’ in the state
Bengaluru
The scheme was launched by Karnataka Energy Department in association with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a Public Energy Service company under the administration of Union Ministry of Power. The Karnataka government is looking to reduce energy consumption by replacing inefficient tungsten bulb with LED bulbs.
Distribution of 50 lakh LED bulbs in Karnataka has led to daily energy savings of over 17 lakh kwh, which is capable of lighting over 1.2 lakh homes for 365 days. Besides the savings in units, the state has also benefited from daily CO2 emission reduction of 1,440 tonnes, a release said here on Tuesday. EESL Managing Director Saurabh Kumar said, “Karnataka has been the fastest state to distribute 50 lakh LED bulbs.
Undoubtedly, energy efficiency has become a national mission. Switching to LED bulbs will not only bring down our carbon footprint, but ensure savings and will also help in government’s vision of providing power to all.” The UJALA Scheme is currently being implemented in five circles in Karnataka and 27,92,000 LED bulbs were distributed in Bengaluru, 15,17,000 bulbs in Mysuru, 2,89,000 in Mangaluru, 2,63,000 in Kalaburgi and 1,55,000 bulbs in Hubballi.
The Union government is committed to achieving its target of replacing all the 77 crore inefficient bulbs in India with LEDs. This will result in reduction of 20,000 MW load, energy savings of 100 billion kWh and Green House Gas (GHG) reduction of 80 million tonnes every year.
