UGC, AICTE blamed for falling standards in education
The parliamentary committee attached with Human Resource Development Ministry has held private as well as governmental educational institutions responsible for the declining standards in education in the country and has pulled up bodies like University Grants Commission and AICTE for failing to put stops in their functioning
New Delhi
A committee constituted under the presidentship of BJP’s Satya Narayana Jatiya has reported this in its 274th report. Terming the action taken by the government on the recommendations made in the report on the grant demands in the year 2015-16 ‘inadequate’, the committee has expressed unhappiness over the ministry’s replies.Â
The committee has clearly stated in its report that be it the private or governmental educational institution, paucity of teachers and their declining standards is a cause of worry. The committee had made a recommendation this year that a survey must be done about the quality of teachers and their shortage in private educational universities but unfortunately the request fell on deaf ears. No action has been taken till date.Â
The committee has also made a point that complaints have been received about UGC and AICTE recently and serious introspection is needed about them. Honesty and transparency is the need of the hour in these two bodies and therefore they need to be made more accountable and transparent.Â
In reply, the ministry presented its side of the story and told about the steps taken in this connection but the committee was dissatisfied with the ministry’s version. The committee is of the view that not only these institutions need to be under surveillance but action too should be taken against them.
