Congress to bring privilege move against Smriti
Charging that Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani was misleading Parliament on the issue of Dalit scholar Rohith Vermula’s suicide, the Congress said on Saturday that it would bring a privilege motion against her in both the Houses.

Talking to reporters here, AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik said the statement made by Smriti Irani in Parliament on Rohith’s suicide was false and aimed at misleading the nation.
“The minister incorrectly stated that no doctor reached Rohith’s body till the morning after his suicide and that police reached Hyderabad Central University the morning after his suicide. The University CMO said this was not true. The CMO reached Rohith’s room within minutes of hearing about his suicide that evening itself. She then examined the body and informed the Vice-Chancellor that Rohith was no more. Rohith’s brother and the CMO said police reached that evening itself. Ms Irani’s statement is false and meant to mislead the nation. We will bring a Privilege Motion against the HRD Minister for her false statements in Parliament,” Mr Wasnik, who addressed the press meet along with AICC spokespersons Kumari Selja and Manish Tewari, said.
Asked whether the party would bring the privilege motion in the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha, Mr Wasnik said, “We will bring the privilege motion in both the Houses of Parliament.”
He added: “The HRD Minister statement in the House was to serve as a balm for the loved ones of Rohith, but instead she rubbed salt into their wounds.”
Wasnik said Irani had also insinuated that Rohith was not a Dalit. “This claim has also been rubbished by the Rohith’s mother Radhika Vemula and has said that a magisterial inquiry was underway to determine the facts and the outcome should be awaited.” Wasnik charged that a letter was written which called Rohith and other Dalit students anti-nationals and extremists.
