ISRO scores with textbook launch

India has joined a group of nations equipped with own satellite navigation systems like the US-based Global Positioning System (GPS). 

The PSLV-C31 rocket lifted off with IRNSS 1-E at 9.31 am from the spaceport at SDSC-SHAR. The satellite was placed in its orbit 19 minutes after the PSLV rocket lifted off. Scientists at the launch facility celebrated the textbook precision launch of the satellite with all-round applause from onlookers. 

“With this launch we have successfully completed 33 missions for PSLV. We have now realised the goal of one PSLV launch every month,” he said. 

Addressing the nation after the successful launch of IRNSS-1E satellite in the PSLV C-31 mission from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Chairman A.S. Kiran Kumar said the other two satellites in the seven constellation Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) series would be launched in a few months. 

“This year we have a long way ahead, we have to complete the IRNSS constellation and we also intend to complete the launch of GSLV Mk-III, which is going to carry a heavier satellite into orbit,” he said. Director of SDSC-SHAR P. Kunhikrishnan added that 2016 would be a hectic year for SHAR.
