My love for silk is inherited from my Guru and mentor ML Vasantha Kumari Amma, who used to wear only Kancheepuram silk sarees. Having been with her for 13 years, imbibing her qualities and way of life, this legacy of silk was also passed on to me.

My collections are from various places like Hyderabad, Kancheepuram etc., to experiment with different patterns, colours, borders, weaves and designs.

There is a resplendence and grandeur about Kancheepuram silk. When a lady adorns silk, her feminine qualities or Padhavisu as we call it in Tamil, are reflected. I have heard that people come with the cover flaps from my song CDs and ask for that specific design of silk saree (Laughs). I am indeed proud that I am passing on this legacy and the love for silk to a larger crowd.

I always feel that Pattu and Paatu are connected. Right from the days of MS Subbulakshmi Amma, shops like Nalli wove ‘MS Blue’ and a specific tinge of tangerine and green specially for her.

Being in a field that is traditionally bound, I feel silk is one element connected very closely to our clan. For me, silk sarees are very much a part of our heritage, like our carnatic music.

    Most favourite silk saree

This one silk saree from my collection, which is almost 90 per cent gold, with pastel purple border, that I wore while being honoured with Padma Bhushan Award, is very close to my heart.
