How often can one undergo angioplasty? How many blocks can be removed? Anandan, AyanavaramÂ
Depending upon the location of the block, nature of block (hard or soft), length of block, number of blocks, size of blood vessel, presence of diabetes, percentage of block, presence of clot, several other factors are taken into consideration to decide whether a block can be removed by angioplasty. Though most blocks can be removed by angioplasty, it is often important to access the patient and angio film carefully for angioplasty. Talking about the number, there is no limit to the number of times one can undergo the procedure, provided the block is feasible. Dr.G. Sengottuvelu, Interventional Cardiologist
My mother has had a stroke, is it hereditary? Am I at any risk of suffering one? Ravi K, PeriametÂ
Those with a family history of stroke must be aware of the risk and we have Doppler tests that can predict strokes. Stroke detection through changes in Face, Arms, Speech and Time (F.A.S.T) can help provide timely treatment to the patient preventing serious brain damage. Uneven face like drooping of the mouth, one arm hanging down and slurred speech are some of the common symptoms of a stroke and timely treatment can keep the effects of stroke under check— preferably four and a half hours after the attack. A life can be saved if prompt action is taken and the patient is rushed to a hospital with a CT scan facility immediately after the stroke is detected. Dr Sathish Kumar V, Senior Consultant Neurologist and Stroke Specialist
