Vijayanagara era stone found near Hosur
A team of archaeologists and history enthusiasts of the Krishnagiri District History Search Organisation have found a Tamil stone inscription dating back to the year 1408 in a village near Hosur on Wednesday. President of that organisation ‘Aram’ A. Krishnan told DTNext that the inscription belongs to the Vijayanagara Dynasty.
The inscription was found on a rocky surface close to a piece of agricultural land belonging to farmer Ariappa near Bairamangalam village, about 10 km from Hosur in Krishnagiri district.
Mr. Krishnan who led the team that documented the inscription said that the inscription stated that a villager Mudali Chetty son of Chetty Vamanadevar alias Sogudaiyappan of Bairamangalam has donated his 500 ‘kuzhi’ land to Hariraya Vibadan, who served the Vijayanagara kingdom under the leadership of territorial commander Veera Ariyappa Udaiyar in 1408.
“Kuzhi was a land measuring standard and 500 kuzhi is almost equal to 50,000 sq.ft.,” he said and added that the inscription also stated that anyone who tries to damage the land is committing a sin that is as bad as killing a ‘Karam’ breed cow on the banks of the Ganges. He said that they could read only about 11 lines from the piece of rock.
Mr. Krishnan added that they have documented the inscription and will soon send it to the Tamil University, at Tanjore. The inscription was in Thurmuki a Tamil year corresponding to 1408 AD. He said that this coincides with the current Tamil year of Thurmuki. The organisation plans to study the inscription further.
