Sofia Ashraf now takes on ‘good news’ in new video
The rapper has come up with a video titled Any Good News, a satire on most mothers’ euphemism for news on pregnancy
Chennai
For every Indian parent ‘good news’ is synonymous with being pregnant. Sofia Ashraf’s latest video titled Any Good News on Culture Machine’s digital channel Blush, is a satire on a typical south Indian mother’s euphemism for ‘Are you pregnant?’.
As the conversation between the mother-daughter duo unfolds, the video cracks you up with parental expectation. Sofia became popular after rapping in the viral song video Kodaikanal Won’t, which gave a corporate giant many sleepless nights. She had also released a video as a part of Culture Machine’s digital channel Blush called Tam-Brahm boy, as part of their new series called Sista from the South earlier this year.
“Any Good News is a song conversation between my onscreen mother and I, where she keeps questioning me if I have any ‘good news’,” she explained. Initially, Sofia talks about little things in the video that are going right in her day such as good hair and no acne. She continues talking about her promotion at work and her high SAT scores. Since her mother is still unimpressed, Sofia brings out the big guns and talks about solving the Syrian Refugee crisis and finding a solution to the grand unified theory. “But no matter what you have achieved in life, a mother’s parameter for her daughter’s success is measured by her pregnancy,” added Sofia.
Sofia went on to add, “Any Good News is a question that plagues any married woman’s life. It’s sad that no matter what we achieve, we are considered to have purpose only when we pop one out. I’m hoping moms and daughters can sit and have a laugh about this silly conundrum and realise how ridiculous this mindset is.” When asked what her mother’s reaction was to the video, she said, “My mom loved the video. Her reaction? So, mole. Any good news?”
Another rendition from the Sista from the South series, this video sets the tone for a generation that strives to change their parent’s perception towards life.
