Kulasekarapattinam Dussehra festival begins with flag hoist
The famous Dussehra festival at Kulasekarapattinam Mutharamman temple commenced with flag hoisting ceremony on Saturday. The festival at Kulasekarapattinam is a renowned one after the Mysore festival in the country. Thousands of devotees would visit the temple in all the 10 days of the festival.

Earlier, the flag was taken in a palanquin through the important streets of Kulasekarapattinam and special prayers were offered to it. Before the flag hoisting ceremony, the flag post was decorated and special prayers were offered by the devotees.Â
Large number of devotees carried milk pots to the temple from the surrounding villages and offered special prayers. In the afternoon anndhanam was provided to the devotees in the temple.Â
Devotees dressed as Goddess Kali reached the Mutharamman temple and offered special prayers by performing holy dance at the temple. Against the Dussehra festival which is being conducted for 9 days at Mysore, the Dussehra festival at Kulasekarapattinam is celebrated for 12 days.
On the 10th day the most important part of the festival, the soorasamharam, would be conducted in which the Goddess would kill Magishasooran. During the course of the festival devotees would dress as Goddess Kali and would collect money by begging. With the amount collected they would reach the temple.Â
The streets of Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts would witness large number of such devotees during the festival.Â
Apart from that cultural teams from various parts of the state and Kerala would visit the villages near Kulasekarapattinam and perform various programs.
