Inspired by cultures across the world
Noted Bangladeshi artist Vinita Karim speaks about her latest exhibit in the city at a special showcase titled Introspective Revelations
Chennai
What inspires your work?Â
My work is based on my travels around the world and the inspiration that I have derived from living in diverse cities such as Stockholm, Cairo, Manila and Dhaka to mention a few. My exposure to these disparate cultures is what has shaped me both as an individual and as an artist.Â
Tell us about your showcase in the cityÂ
One of the paintings in this show is called Tree of Life. I love using the Tree of Life construct because it has been universally used by different cultures to denote the source of life. Within the Nordic cultures, the tree of life provides a magical spring of knowledge. Within Egyptian mythology, Isis and Osiris emerged from the tree of life. My work is based on abstract cityscapes of places that I dream of. I have created an imaginary city growing organically on my very own Tree of Life. This tree carries cities and the hopes and aspirations of people living in it and hopes for a wonderful future for our coming generations.Â
What medium have you worked on?Â
The medium I have used is acrylic pigments embellished with gold and copper leaves on canvas. In another painting exhibited in this show, called Reflections of glory, I have used intricate silk embroidery on Dhaka muslin which is stitched on to the canvas. This adds another interesting dimension to the painting which highlights the rich traditions of handicrafts in the Indian sub-continent.
