Creating awareness on dwindling tiger population
International Tiger Day is held annually on July 29 to bring worldwide attention to the reservation of tigers. It is both an awareness day and a celebration. Here are a few interesting facts about the observance:
Chennai
The goal of International Tiger Day is to promote the protection and expansion of the wild tiger’s habitats and to gain support through awareness of tiger conservation.Â
The day was founded at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in 2010. This was done because at that moment wild tigers were too close to extinction. Â
Tigers lost 93% of their natural habitat due to the expansion of cities and agriculture by humans. Fewer tigers can survive in small, scattered islands of habitat, which lead to a higher risk of inbreeding.Â
A 2011 census counted about 1,700 tigers in the wild in India. A century ago, there were estimated to be 100,000 tigers in India, but numbers have shrunk alarmingly in recent decades due to rampant poaching.Â
Many animal welfare organisations pledged to help the tigers and are still helping to raise funds to reach this goal.
