Tell us about the upcoming play
Class of ‘84 is based on my experiences in St Xaviers College from 1979 to 1984. It is about my gang of friends who are like my soulmates. The characters in the play are based on them. I began writing plays because I felt that there are so many stories I wanted to tell. Audiences want to watch plays they can identify with.
English plays have an elitist tag attached to them, especially with respect to vernacular theatre. Your comment
I personally believe if you narrate a story that your audience can relate to then the language doesn’t matter. For instance, this play is about friendship and will strike an instant bond with one and all. It is about the subject of the play and how you present it not about the language. I don’t think English theatre should be considered elitist anymore.
What are your expectations from the Chennai audience?
I feel Chennai is the most discerning audiences in India and they love their theatre. So I feel they will enjoy the play a lot. The play, presented by Cherry Pik Ventures in association with Rage will be staged on June 26 at Lady Andal Auditorium, Chetpet.
