Tips for women travellers
RESEARCH WELL BEFORE PLANNING A TRIPÂ
Planning and researching for a trip is almost as fun as travelling! You can virtually travel to a historic town, cool mountains or an awesome beach before narrowing down on your choice of destination. But research is not just about fun for women travellers. It will also ensure safety and preparedness for any and every kind of situation. What are the best neighbourhoods and the ones you should avoid? Is a particular hotel safe? Are there only certain kinds of taxis you should take? Is there a medical centre in the city, just in case? These are points that one needs to surely tick before making an itinerary.
PACK YOUR LUGGAGE CAREFULLYÂ
Women have a tendency to pack a lot of stuff in their luggage. Often they do not want to leave behind a favourite dress, trouser or make up kit while compromising on essential things like flash lights, ropes and medicines. Pack your luggage sensibly. Make a list of things you want to take and travel essentials. Then strike down things that are absolutely unnecessary. It is most important to pack intelligently if you are travelling alone, since there will be nobody to lug your bags around.
SPEND EXTRA MONEY ON STAYING SAFEÂ
If you’re travelling long-term on a shoestring budget, it can be hard to justify spending extra cash when it could go towards so many more fun activities. But it’s a smart idea to financially invest in your safety. It means that if your flight is scheduled to land in a rough city late at night, you should spend more money on a guest house that will pick you up right from the airport instead of taking a bus into town and trying to find a guest house on foot. It means you should pay extra money to take a taxi home at night if you don’t feel comfortable walking through the neighbourhood on your own.
CHECK IN REGULARLYÂ
It’s a good idea for at least one designated friend or family member to have a copy of your itinerary in advance: your flight numbers, your accommodation, and a general schedule of where you’ll be on which dates, as well as information on your travel insurance, credit cards and a bank account number. Plan ahead of time how you’ll check in and how often, whether it’s through daily emails, texts, social media updates, or regular Skype chats. Whatever you choose to do, make sure you keep a consistent schedule.
