It’s easy to style Sania, she owns every outfit: Anam Mirza

Anam Mirza, stylist and sister of tennis champion Sania Mirza, is in town for the launch of the third season of her exhibition, The Label Bazaar. She speaks to us about what the latest edition offers, working with her sister, and how styling isn’t as big a deal as it’s made out to be.

From living in the shadow of her sister Sania Mirza to styling Tollywood A-listers, Anam Mirza has come a long way. Anam comes across as quite the star herself as she poses for photographs and juggles multiple interviews with panache.

“My sister’s training has helped quite a bit,” she says as she speaks at the pre-launch of The Label Bazaar. After two successful editions in Hyderabad, Anam is bringing the third edition of the exhibition that was also held in Mumbai and Hyderabad, for the first time to Chennai.

“We’ve never had big designers, those who were in the spotlight, coming to Hyderabad. So, I wanted to create a platform where shoppers in the city would have access to the best creations the industry has to offer. That’s how the idea came about. However, over time, I’ve consciously developed it into a space for both fresh and established designers. Also, I didn’t want it to be just another exhibition. Rather, I’ve tried to give the shopper a wholesome experience. The décor, music and the entire ambience has been carefully picked,” she explains.

Showcasing everything from clothes and accessories to bags and beauty products under one roof, the exhibition that will be held at Taj Coromandel, in the presence of its brand ambassador, Sania Mirza, on April 15, will have works of Mayank Anand, Shraddha Nigam, Aarti Vijay Gupta, Kukoon, Masala Chai and more. Anam, who tied the knot with Akbar Rasheed, an entrepreneur, in November last year, has also brought her husband on board for her venture.

“We’ve hardly had time for a honeymoon. We’ve been constantly working since we married. But we’ve discovered each other a lot more through this venture. He’s the pillar of my work. While I only take care of getting the designers together, he takes care of everything else,” says Anam. But who’s the boss? “We both have our days. We have conflicts every day. But it’s fun and part of the game,” she muses.

Anam has styled quite a few south Indian celebrities including the likes of Shriya Saran, Rakul Preet Singh and Regina Cassandra. However, her favourite continues to be her sister Sania.

“It’s easy to style her because she has such a powerful personality and her confidence makes it easy to slip her into any outfit. I’d love to style my brother-inlaw Shoaib Malik some time. Having said that, styling isn’t all dramatic as people make it sound. It’s just about getting 20-25 outfits together and making the individual fit in the perfect one. However, designing an outfit is where the true challenge is. You need to learn it professionally at a college. I hope to make time for it and come out with my own line someday,” she finishes.
