CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has dismissed actor Vijay’s petition challenging the Rs 1.50 crore penalty imposed by the Income Tax Department, holding that the fine is valid and justified.

The case goes back to 2015, when I-T officials conducted a raid at Vijay’s residence and office, seizing several documents. For the financial year 2015–16, Vijay had declared an income of Rs 35.42 crore.

However, during the assessment, officials found that he had failed to disclose Rs 15 crore received as remuneration for acting in the film Puli.

Based on this, the I-T Department issued an order on June 30, 2022, imposing a penalty of Rs 1.50 crore. Vijay subsequently challenged the order in the High Court, which had earlier granted an interim stay on the penalty.

After hearing detailed arguments from both sides, Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy reserved the judgment and has now ruled in favour of the IT Department, dismissing Vijay’s petition.
