CHENNAI: A few days ago, filmmaker Venkat Prabhu hinted that the re-release of Mankatha was on the cards. Headlined by Ajith Kumar, the film is re-releasing on big screens on January 23, the team announced on Sunday.
A heist thriller, the film is considered to be one of the best works of Ajith, as he will be seen in a grey to negative-shaded role. Released in 2011, it marked the actor’s 50th film. The film revolves around Vinayak Mahadev, a corrupt and suspended police officer driven by greed rather than morality. He teams up with a group of friends planning to steal a massive sum of black money, Rs 500 crore, collected from illegal cricket betting. How the group executes their plan and finally who will get the entire amount forms the crux of the film, with many twists and turns.
The cast ensemble includes Arjun Sarja, Trisha Krishnan, Rai Lakshmi, Anjali, Andrea Jeremiah, Ashwin Kakumanu, Vaibhav, Premji, Mahat Raghavendra, Jayaprakash, Aravind Akash, and Subbu Panchu. Yuvan Shankar Raja composed the iconic songs of the film, which still remain at the top of many fans’ playlists.
With this re-release, Mankatha joins the club of major Tamil films that have been re-released, including Padayappa, Ghilli, Sachein, Vaaranam Aayiram, Mersal, Attagasam, Kushi, and Thalapathi, among others.
