CHENNAI: City Police on Thursday arrested a 37 year old man for allegedly attacking an elderly man with a spade for refusing to pay money to buy alcohol.

The arrested person was identified as K Hemanathan of K P Park housing board quarters in Pulianthope. According to police, the incident happened on Wednesday night.

The victim, K Nagaraj (50) of Sundarapuram 4th street was on Motilal street in Pulianthope when the accused intercepted him and asked him to give money to consume alcohol. When Nagaraj refused, the accused picked up an argument with him and in the melee, took the spade from a construction site nearby and attacked Nagaraj with it.

Nagaraj suffered cut injuries and was rescued by the passerby. He was moved to a hospital nearby, where he is treated. Based on his complaint, Basin Bridge police registered a case and arrested Hemanathan. He was produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody.
