CHENNAI: In a scene reminiscent of the Tamil movie, Pudhupettai in which the character Kumar played by actor Dhanush ties Mangalsutra around the bride’s neck on the wedding dais taking even her by surprise, a 24-year-old youth here in Tondiarpet attempted a similar act, but ended up getting thrashed by the bride’s family members.

After the thrashing, came a shock as police investigations revealed that the intruder, Ramesh (24) (name changed) was invited to the wedding by the bride herself.

Police said that the bride (20) and the man were in a relationship for the past two years. They got acquainted with each other while working as salespersons in a famous jewellery store in the city.

However, the woman’s family started looking for matrimonial alliance and fixed her wedding with a seafarer from the neighbourhood, unaware of the woman’s relationship.

“The woman had texted her boyfriend to do something to get her out of the situation, ” a police officer said, adding that Ramesh had even helped the bride’s family with the wedding chores.

On Friday morning, the wedding was scheduled to happen around 7 am at a wedding hall in Nethaji Nagar in Tondiarpet.

Ramesh took position in the wedding dais behind the bride and the groom. As the priest handed over the mangalsutra to the groom, Ramesh grabbed it and attempted to tie it around the woman’s neck.

The bride’s brothers and family members pounced on Ramesh before he could finish his act. Chaos ensued at the venue as Ramesh got thrashed by the family members and informed the police.

Police who reached the scene found the truth after which the wedding got called off by the groom’s family. An argument ensued between both the families after which police pacified them. Since no one preferred a complaint, a case was not registered, a police official said.
