The arrested were identified as Subramanian (42), Srikanth (19), Chandru (19) and Thamal (19). Police first picked up Subramanian, a former employee of the firm whom the money belongs to, since he had already been arrested by Maduravoyal police in December last year along with two others for robbing another employee of the same firm.

Investigation revealed that Subramanian befriended the other accused in prison and informed them about the regular money transaction of the said firm and also a hatched a plan to carry out the loot.

On Sunday, they followed the firm’s employee Vijayakumar from Vanagaram towards Kodungaiyur and intercepted him near Ambattur Industrial Estate on Chennai bypass road. They attacked him and escaped with the cash bag.

While Vijayakumar was admitted at hospital, Ambattur Estate police registered a case about the incident. The special team with the inputs from Subramanian secured the other three from their hideout and seized Rs 70 lakh.

All four were remanded in judicial custody on Wednesday. Police said that the gang spent the remaining money lavishly.
