According to a Corporation statement, 1,351 applications were received from the vendors, who are currently running their shops, and 14,827 were from those who wish to open new shops. In total, 16,178 applications were received.

“Three applications from the existing vendors and 1,853 applications from new vendors have been rejected. The scrutiny of the applications was conducted between December 29 and 31,” the statement said.

The civic body has displayed details of the accepted and rejected applications at the zonal offices and revenue department section at Ripon Building. Also, the lists have been made public on www.chennaicorporation.gov.in. The accepted applications will be put into the lot system to finalise beneficiaries on January 20 and January 21 in front of a high court judge.

It may be noted that the Madras High Court, while ordering the regularisation of Marina shops, had ordered the civic body to remove the shops from the beach and allocate only 900 shops by providing smart carts on a rental basis.

Of the 900 shops to be allowed, 540 shops will be allocated to the existing vendors and 360 shops will be allocated to new vendors.

Meanwhile, the civic body has decided to appoint a third party consultant for quality checking of 900 smart vending carts from the production point to positioning at Marina Beach.
