On Thursday midnight, a group of youngsters parked their bikes in the middle of the road in Ambedkar Nagar in Adambakkam and went on to cut a New Year cake.

Since other vehicles could not use the road, Vimal (22), a local resident, asked them not to block the traffic and a quarrel erupted.

The revellers then attacked Vimal with knives and escaped from the spot. The onlookers informed the police and Vimal was rushed to Chromepet GH and later referred to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

The Adambakkam police have registered a case and are searching for the group who attacked Vimal. Police said all of the accused had consumed liquor.

In another incident, Ramesh (35) of Tirukazhukundram was standing at Perungalathur bus stop when a few men who were celebrating New Year in an intoxicated state fell on Ramesh. After they picked up a fight, Ramesh assaulted a 15-year-old boy in the group. Agitated, the gang members attacked Ramesh with sickles. Peerkankaranai police arrived at the spot and admitted Ramesh to Chromepet GH. Police said Ramesh had also consumed liquor at that time. The police have registered a case and are searching for the attackers.
