Holding placards and banners, they staged a protest at the premises of government hospitals in the city around noon. According to them, the new regulations was unacceptable. The IMA members are opposed to allowing Ayurveda PG students perform general surgery and other procedures of ear, eye, throat, nose and dental procedures, alleging that it would lead to mixing of two different systems of medicine.

IMA Tamil Nadu president Dr CN Raja said the move would affect medical education and allopathic medicine system as a whole. He added that protests were held in small gatherings and all safety protocols were followed to avoid the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

However, while IMA members are against mixing of the two systems of medicines, which they term ‘mixopathy’, Ayurveda and Siddha experts argued that there are surgical procedures in the Indian system of medicine as well, and their acceptance would only be an addition to the healthcare system.
