Faulty drainage system blamed for waterlogging

The inundation on the streets of Kumaran Colony and other areas adjacent to Arcot Road led to the flooding of medical stores and shopping complexes in Vadapalani and neighbouring areas.

Residents blame unscientific construction of the stormwater drains in the locality as the water did not drain out even several hours after rain.

“Most of the medicine carton boxes got soiled and they cannot be sold anymore. Anticipating that heavy rains might lead to waterlogging, I could keep some of the medicine boxes at home but a lot of stock got spoilt. The streets get inundated with rainwater even during short spells of rain as the drainage system is faulty,” said J Kumar, a medical store owner in Vadapalani.

The major shopping malls, complexes and stores in the area pumped out the rainwater from their basements to the main road while residents could be seen draining out rainwater with buckets.

“While waterlogging is a long pending issue in the locality, the mixing of sewage in the rainwater also bothers us. Many vehicles are parked by the roadside as they stopped working due to waterlogging. The sewage dumped on the footpath also gets mixed with the rainwater and remains stagnated for many days,” said R Preethika, a resident of Kumaran Colony in Vadapalani.
