According to a civic body official, 3,200 saplings of various tree species were planted on the 25,117 sqft land located on Old Mahabalipuram Road in Thoraipakkam. Apart from trees, the civic body also planted flowering plants at the site. Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash inspected the plantation site and planted saplings.

On November 8, the civic body had started planting 2,800 tree saplings on a 15,586 sqft land located on Model School Road in Sholinganallur.

Earlier, the Chennai Corporation had planted saplings using the Miyawaki method in Kotturpuram. Around 2,000 saplings of 40 species were planted on a 20,724 sqft land at a cost of Rs 20 Lakh. Also, 762 saplings were already planted on 6,000 sqft on Second Main Road in Royala Nagar.

Under the Miyawaki method of developing forest, originated in Japan, the civic body dug the earth up to four feet to plant the saplings. Wet waste, coconut coir, cow dung and others are used fertilisers.

The Corporation has plans to create urban forests on vacant plots, sides of waterbodies and government lands across the city using the same method.
