Police, after interrogating him, said that he fell asleep inside the temple on the night of October 15 and when he woke up found himself alone inside. “He had financial problems because of COVID-19 protocols. He had fished out around Rs 5,000 including coins from two hundials. He had sent Rs 2,000 to his wife, said police adding the investigators had seized some coins from him. After the theft, he had jumped over the wall of the temple and escaped.

Police also said he had some symptoms of being mentally unstable. He was remanded in judicial custody on Thursday.

Police after watching the surveillance camera footage said the man acted like a true devotee and before stealing from the hundial, he gave his prayers and made an offering for a blessing to complete his ‘mission’ successfully. However, police caught up with him in three weeks.
