“Within a few hours of rain, the city was flooded. In addition to desilting the stormwater drains, the Chennai Corporation should keep the chutes free of clogs. Those clogs nullify the presence of stormwater drains,” G Arun Kumar, a private firm employee said.

Meanwhile, Greater Chennai Corporation workers removed two fallen trees each from the roads in Teynampet and Adyar. As per the civic body data, 187 trees fell between July 1 to October 29 due to rain.

The Corporation has set up a monsoon control room at Ripon Building so that residents could raise rain-related complaints.

The rain also brought down the maximum and minimum temperatures in the city. On Thursday, Nungambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 28.2 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 23.6 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Meenambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 29.2 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 23.2 degrees Celsius.

Neighbouring districts like Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur also received heavy rain during the day. As per the latest reports from Indian Meteorological Department, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rain in the next two days. Several other districts, including Ranipet, Villupuram, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram and Thoothukudi, are also likely to receive heavy rain during the same period.

The city and neighbouring areas are likely to have a cloudy sky with intermittent thunderstorms and moderate rain. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 29 degrees and 24 degrees Celsius respectively.

Weather blogger Pradeep John stated that the rainfall received on Thursday in Chennai is the highest single-day rainfall in the city since November 2017. He added that more rainfall is expected in Chennai as the Northeast Monsoon sets in.
