The four-lane bi-directional flyover, being constructed at a cost of Rs 93.5 crore, would help vehicles avoid two signals at CMBT and Kaliamman Koil Street junctions.

Sources in the Highways department said that nearly 88 per cent of the work has been completed and construction would be over in three months. “We expect to complete concrete works by December end. The remaining works, including that of ramps, would be completed in another one month,” sources said, adding the flow of traffic between Kaliamman Koil Street junction and CMBT has improved a lot after damaged road surface was relaid. Sources added that now movement of vehicles is getting hindered near actor Vijayakanth’s Kalyana Mandapam due to the ongoing works.

The 1.15-km-long flyover would ease the flow of vehicles in the busy junction of Jawaharlal Nehru Salai-Kaliamman Koil street which witnesses around 15,000 vehicles. The stretch houses Mofussil Bus Terminus and the Omni Bus Stand, besides the Koyambedu vegetable market. The four-lane flyover is being constructed on a single pillar foundation.

Sources said they had sought the police permission to close the Kaliamman Koil Street-Jawaharlal Nehru Salai junction to take up construction of the concrete structure of the flyover.

“Already the vehicles coming from the Kaliamman Koil Street were not allowed to take a right turn on the Jawaharlal Nehru Salai and instead they have to go around the Koyambedu grade separator. Now vehicles coming from Anna Nagar side of the Jawaharlal Nehru Salai were allowed to enter the Kaliamman Koil Street. Due to traffic changes, those vehicles have to go and take u-turn near CMBT,” sources noted.
