Day after girl’s suicide, lover ends life in Washermenpet

Police said Divya of Tondiarpet, a final-year BCom student of a private college in Sathangadu, was in a relationship with Ayyapan (20) of Washermenpet, who was in his third year of BCom course in Dr Ambedkar Government Arts College, for about four years.

Due to lockdown, Ayyapan was riding autorickshaw and his parents allegedly started looking for a girl for his marriage. Divya who came to know about this allegedly quarrelled with Ayyapan.

On Monday evening too, Divya reportedly quarrelled with Ayyapan over the phone and told him that she was going to end his life. Panicked Ayyapan alerted Divya’s brother and they both rushed to the house in Tondiarpet.

Since the door was locked from inside, they broke open the door and found Divya hanging from the ceiling. They rushed her to Government Stanley Hospital but was declared brought dead. On information, Tondiarpet police registered a case.

Meanwhile, Ayyapan, dejected over Divya’s death, went to his house in Washermenpet and locked himself up in his room. On Monday morning, his parents found him hanging and alerted police. Washermenpet police removed his body and sent it for postmortem. A separate case has been registered on Ayyapan’s death.

Though no suicide note has been recovered, police said Ayyapan left his mobile phone and bike at Divya’s house since he rushed her to the hospital but did not return to collect them.
